Lobelia which is a part of the family the Bell-flower family is presented by bushes, semi-bushes, and grassy plants among which there are both annuals and perennials. A part of scientists considers that this plant is the representative of the Lobeliyevye family.
Description of cultivation
Gardeners grow up about 20 species of a lobelia. It is very simple to grow up from seeds this flower in the garden, therefore, beginners are recommended to pay attention to it in gardening.
- Landing. Seeds on seedling sow at the beginning of February and carry out planting of a seedling to the open soil 8–10 weeks later (approximately in the middle of May).
- Blossoming. Begins in May, and comes to an end in September.
- Illumination. Needs a large amount of bright sunlight.
- Soil. Friable sandy or loamy not too nutritious.
- Watering. The soil is humidified often, especially in hot weather. At cultivation of ampelous types and grades, their watering is carried out twice a day.
- Fertilizer. For fertilizing use mineral complex fertilizer for the blossoming plants. The first time fertilizer is introduced to the soil later a half-month after planting of seedling in a garden and by the second and third ― during blossoming. Organic fertilizers for fertilizing are not recommended to be used.
- Reproduction. Division of roots and in a seed way. Terry grades make multiple copies only shanks.
- Mean insects. Plant lice, web pincers, and slugs.
- Diseases. White mold, rust, sheet, and stem bacterioses, a virus of bronzing of leaves.
Features of a Lobelia
The long-term lobelia, as a rule, in gardens of middle latitudes is cultivated as an annual. It represents a compact bush of spherical shape which height can vary from 0,6 – 0,8 ft. However such types and grades whose height can reach 4,9 ft meet. Thin sprouts of a lobelia begin to branch from the basis.
On stalks magnificent located one after another foliage which has plates integral form grows. On short pedicels flowers, in the diameter, the reaching 0,7 oz are formed. The color of flowers depends on a grade and can be purple, violet, white, dark blue or blue. As a rule, the lobelia in June blossoms, and blossoming in September comes to an end.
On the place of flowers, the set of the fruits representing with a set of seeds boxes is formed. Seed material of a lobelia remains viable for three years. This flower since 1861 is cultivated.
Cultivation of a Lobelia from seeds
Most often the lobelia is made multiple copies seeds. Therefore its cultivation begins with seeding of seeds to the soil. There will pass from only 8 to 10 weeks from the moment of seeding, and young bushes will begin to blossom.
Gardeners prefer to grow up this flower through seedling, at the same time carry outcrops at the beginning of February. For this purpose take cartridges for the cultivation of seedling, cells at them have to have a height of about 1,9 oz. At the bottom of cartridges, it is necessary to make a drainage layer, for this purpose it is possible to use small pieces of bark or expanded clay.
From above the drainage is filled up with a layer of the easy soil which needs to be kneaded well before it it is connected to river sand and coconut fiber.
Well moisten substrate and wait until it accumulates. After that evenly distribute seeds on its surface, previously they need to be connected to sand. It is not recommended to bury seed material in soil mix as in this case seedlings cannot appear.
It is powered from above with a thin layer of sand that will save crops from fast drying. From above capacity should be covered with glass (film) then it is transferred to a well-lit window sill, do not forget to protect crops from direct beams of the sun.
Care of seedling
Excessive moisture in the substrate will bring to seedlings much less harm, than the dried-up substrate and excessively warm and dry air. Because of its thinning of the plant is observed that leads to their death. In this regard, if indoors air temperature over 22 degrees, then crops need to be covered from above with a film and do not forget them to humidify in due time.
Not to fill in shoots and not to chill them, watering is recommended to be carried out through a pallet (the lower watering). In cool young lobelias grow much better, than in heat, especially if to consider that they can sustain a decrease in air temperature to minus 2 degrees.
For the first four weeks, seedlings will differ in extremely slow growth, however, then they will begin to grow much quicker. After the height of plant reaches 1,8 – 1,9 oz (there is it later few months after seeding of seeds on seedling), they should be dive on glasses of 100 ml, at the same time in each of them plant 3 or 4 seedlings.
When the height of young lobelias is equal to 2,3 – 2,7 oz, they need a nipping, as a result, bushes will grow at more magnificent. Flowers appear already on the seedling.
Disembarkation in a garden
As a rule, to the open soil, the grown-up seedling of lobelia is replaced from the middle until the end of May after the threat of returnable frosts remains behind. The suitable site has to be well lit, at the same time soil is necessary friable, not really nutritious loamy or sandy. Paving the way to the planting of seedling, it is impossible to bring a too large amount of nitrogen in it, otherwise, bushes will grow magnificent, but will blossom they very poorly.
In one landing hole, it is necessary to plant all seedlings which are in one glass (3 or 4 pieces). By preparation of holes observe between them a distance in 0,3 – 0,5 ft.
If you decided to grow up an ampelous lobelia, then also begin with crops of seeds on the seedling. Look after the appeared seedlings in the same way as it was described above, however, the grown-up seedlings are replaced in suspended baskets or a cachepot.
Ampelous grades will become the fine decoration of loggias, balconies, the open and enclosed space and also windows from the outer side of the building.
If you do not want to grow up annually lobelia seedling, then it is possible to resort to the following cunning. In autumn time dig out bushes and transfer them to a wintering to the cold greenhouse, it will allow you to grow up a plant as a perennial.
Also, those grades which very much were pleasant to you with an approach of fall it is possible to put in a pot and to bring to the house. Bushes have to winter in well lit and cool place. With an approach of spring from bushes shanks which land on rooting in individual capacities are cut off. After shanks have backs, they can be replaced in a garden.
This way of reproduction is used also in that case when the gardener is afraid that at a reproduction of certain grade seeds, the grown flowers can lose high-quality qualities of a parental plant.
It is quite simple to look after a lobelia therefore also the experienced gardener and the beginner will be able easily to grow up it on the site. The most important for the good growth and development of a flower ― is regular watering. You watch that soil around bushes was always a little moist. Special attention to waterings should be paid during the droughty hot period. At cultivation of ampelous versions, it is necessary to remember that the bush should be watered systematically twice a day.
To keep the decorative effect of bushes, they should be cut off in due time. It is recommended to cut off bushes at the end of the first blossoming. Escapes shorten up to 2 oz from the surface of the soil. Later a few time new stalks will grow and the bush will blossom again, as a rule, repeated blossoming is more magnificent and effective.
During the summer such flowers feed up twice or three times, for this purpose use mineral complex fertilizer.
Leaving after blossoming
The bushes which faded finally can be dug out and utilized together with other one-year cultures, previously having collected seed material if it is necessary. The truth bushes can be removed from the site and in the spring, but in this case, there will be a self-sowing of a lobelia, at the same time the grown bushes will begin to blossom much after those that are grown up through seedling.
Therefore if desired to carry out collecting seeds from the bushes which were pleasant to you in the fall, and use them for crops in the spring. Collecting seed material is carried out as follows: cut off a bush and shake it over a newspaper leaf.
Everything that will be showered on paper, sift and put seeds in a paper package or boxes from under matches on storage. Do not forget to sign a look, a grade, and date of collecting.
Lobelia: care of an adult plant
The lobelia has a peculiar character which knowledge will prevent you from many failures and chagrin connected with the cultivation of this flower.
The most pernicious for a lobelia is a drought. It is necessary to water a lobelia often, without allowing long dryings, especially during the summer heat. In such days its leaflets quickly burn slightly in the sun, stalks turn yellow and dry.
It is natural that not only the decorative species but also the health of a plant suffers. Often the lobelia does not pass such tests and after regular dryings or one-time, but long, droughts – perishes.
At the same time, the lobelia is not too favorable also to stagnation of water near roots. Therefore, landing it in a pot, it is necessary to take care of the existence of drain holes and a drainage layer at the bottom.
One more scourge for a lobelia is a summer heat from which in July often there is no rescue even on shady sites, northern windows and balconies. As a result of a plant, there are yellow and dry leaves which should be pulled out or cut.
Just the period of a weakening of blossoming of a lobelia falls in the middle of summer. Stalks are extended and turn yellow, florets appear seldom. The problem is solved cardinal cutting after which the second wave of blossoming begins. Cut off a lobelia, leaving about 0,1 – 0,3 ft then bushes accrue a magnificent hat and in 2 weeks blossom again.
The reason for weak blossoming, except heat and drought, it becomes frequent improper soil — rich with organic chemistry or nitrogen mineral fertilizers. Therefore during blossoming, the lobelia needs fertilizing with a nitrogen minimum. Or in general without it. The lobelia on fertilizing by potassium sulfate is very sympathetic. Against the background of it blossoming so plentiful that among flowers it is not visible to greens.
Types and grades of Lobelia with a photo and names
There are such species and grades of a lobelia which are cultivated only as annual plants. For example:
This look has 5 forms, namely: dwarfish, upright, sprawling, curl and compact. The following grades enjoy the greatest popularity: Riviera Skye of Blue ― flowers are painted in a celestial-blue shade; Regatta to a blue ― flowers blue; Rose’s Regatta ― the color of flowers pink.
This look is strongly similar to a compact form of a lobelia эринус, however, it differs in stronger escapes and juicy foliage and also large flowers which possess a blue or purple color with a white speck in a middle.
Lobelia ampelous Riccardi. The bush at it is more and more powerfully the curl of grades of an erinus. This plant is a hybrid and for its reproduction use only shanks.
The height of a bush varies from 0,8 – 1,14 ft and white, blue or lilac flowers in the diameter reach about 0,7 oz.
In quality of both long-term, and one-year culture raise a look a lobelia fine Lobelia speciosa. As perennials cultivate the following types and grades:
Or lobelia fiery. Depending on a grade sheet plates of red or green color can decorate a bush about 2,4 ft high. The most popular grade of such look ― Queen Victoria: the bush in height reaches up to one and a half meters, and it is decorated by flowers of a scarlet color.
This look is disappearing, therefore, it was included in the Red List. In nature it can be met growing at a depth of 1,9 – 2,6 ft in coastal zones at a sandy clean bottom. Flowers of a handbell form are most often painted in pale blue color but can be dark red or white.
The look differs in high resistance to frosts, it is capable to sustain a decrease in temperature to minus 29 degrees. Bush height about 4,1 ft, decorate it in the form of an ear inflorescence.
Either lobelia purple, or lobelia pontifical. The height of a bush is about 3,2 ft. The look was so called for a color of flowers, his queen of England Henriette-Maria compared to the color of stockings of the Cardinal Richelieu.
Or syphilitic’s lobelia. This look got to Europe from America. The dense ears decorating a bush consist of violet-blue florets. The name of a look comes from the word “syphilis” because was considered earlier that this flower is capable to cure of this disease, however the later time it became clear that it not so.
The look did not become popular in Europe, however, it is actively used by selectors for receiving hybrids. For example, the popular hybrid the Compliment was created as a result of crossing of a purple, blue and brilliant lobelia.
